• Dr Attarian is currently a professor of neurology and medical director of sleep medicine and sleep fellowship at Northwestern University. He graduated with a MD in 1992 from American University of Beirut and completed residency in Neurology at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse and fellowships in epilepsy and sleep medicine at University of Rochester and Hennepin County Medical Center respectively. He has Published 70 peer reviewed papers, 20 chapters and three textbooks. Joseph I. Sirven, M.D., is a professor of neurology and editor-in-chief of Epilepsy.com. Antonio Gambardella is full professor of Neurology in the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, University Magna Graecia - Catanzaro, Italy. He is a clinical neurologist and clinical researcher with a special interest in establishing close research links with basic scientists. His group, together with molecular genetic collaborators in Italy, discovered in 2000 the beta2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor gene for nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy and subsequently has been involved in the discovery of other epilepsy genes. A more recent important scientific result has been the discovery of novel gene KCNT1 associated with a severe form of progressive myoclonus epilepsy. He has also focused on clinical and neurophysiological aspects, and genetics of temporal lobe epilepsy, the most common type of focal epilepsy. Dr. Pappolla received his MD degree from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina in 1978. His training includes a PhD Doctorate in Human aging in Barcelona, Spain and medical residencies and fellowships in the USA in Neurology, Anatomic Pathology, Neuropathology and Interventional Pain Medicine (Anesthesia based). Intractable seizures plague approximately a third of epilepsy patients. Despite their prevalence, the mechanisms underlying intractable seizures remain unclear and difficult to study. One factor clouding our understanding of seizure intractability stems from existing animal models of epilepsy, which have not specifically modeled intractable seizures or genetic disorders that often associate with intractable seizures, like Focal Cortical Dysplasia (FCD) or Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). New animal models are greatly needed to understand the underlying causes of intractable seizures and develop new therapies aimed at these indications. Using in utero electroporation to transfect a small population of neurons in vivo with constitutively active mutant of Ras homolog enriched in brain (RhebCA), we have successfully developed a new mouse model of spontaneous epilepsy based on the genetic etiology of mTOR-o-pathies. This model recapitulates both anatomical and behavioral phenotypes of human TSC and FCD. RhebCA transfected animals develop focal cortical malformations that contain dysplastic neurons, cortical dyslamination and white matter heterotopia. Seizures also spontaneously develop as early as postnatal day18, and persist throughout entire lifespan of the animals (2 years). Seizures are the only complication these animals have, otherwise they are completely healthy, making them ideal subjects to study mechanistic causes of seizures and seizure-dependent downstream behavioral and physiological effects. With this model, we have elucidated several mechanisms that contribute to seizure-genesis in TSC and FCD. Lastly, we also use this model to develop new therapies, including novel cannabinoids and RNA interference approaches to mitigate refractory seizures

Annamaria Vezzani obtained her PhD degree in Neuropharmacology in Milano at the Mario Negri Institure for Pharmacological Research. She spent her post-doctoral period at the Univeristy of Maryland in Baltimore working on the mechanisms of seizures generation in experimental models of epilepsy. Additional post-doctoral periods were done at the Univeristy of Stockholm and at the Karolinska Institute. She was on sabbatical at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2002 in the laboratory of Developmental Epilepsy. She studies the biochemical and molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of seizures and epileptogenesis using experimental models. The present research is focused on the role of neuroactive inflammatory mediators in aberrant neuronal excitability underlying seizures. Focus of research is also on the mechanisms of pharmacoresistance. She has published over 160 original papers, several book chapters and reviewes in peer-reviewed high impact scientific journals (h-index 62). Since 1997 she is Head of the Laboratory of Experimental Neurology in the Department of Neuroscience at the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research, Milan, Italy. She is member of the Editorial Board variuos scientific journals includingf Epilepsy Res, Epilepsy and Treatments and Neuroscience, and she has been for 8 years Associate Editor of Basic Science for Epilepsia. My background consists of hippocampal anatomy at light and electron-microscopic levels, in non-human primates and rodents. During PhD my work was focused on experimental models of temporal lobe in rodents. During this time I gained experience in anatomical studies, specially aiming to identify seizure-induced damage in the entire brain and in hippocampal plastic changes caused or related to seizures. My first postdoctoral experience was in the anatomy department under supervision of Ole Peter Ottersen, when I gained abilities to use the electron microscopy as tool to identify the sublocalization of glutamate receptors in the hippocampus. Back to Brazil, now under supervision of Luiz Mello, we focused on the establishment of a new model of temporal lobe epilepsy in non-human primates. I conducted studies examining behavioral and electrophysiological recordings of seizures as well as histological analysis. At the same time I started to use the magnetic resonance imaging as tool to investigate morphological changes in several brain areas after status epilepticus and in chronic epilepsy. In 2006 I got a permanent position as professor at Universidade Federal of Sao Paulo. Since them, I have followed two research lines: (1) experimental models of temporal lobe epilepsy and (2) experimental models of neonatal pain. In both lines I have focused my research on neuroplastic changes caused by these models and its consequences on electrophysiological and behavioral levels. By using Manganese-enhanced MRI, we have been able to demonstrate that hippocampal remodeling after seizures can be followed in both research models. From my research on epilepsy, I was able to demonstrate that thalamic Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a valuable tool to reduce cell apoptosis and inflammatory responses after pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus. By conducting DBS experiments in the chronic phase of pilocarpine, my students and I were able to demonstrate that it causes reduction of spontaneous seizures, reduces the hippocampal excitability and increases adenosine in the same area. The mechanisms underlying the adenosine actions in response to thalamus DBS are still under investigation. I am presently engaged in a number of collaborative efforts between my laboratory and various other laboratories focusing to understand how DBS affects neural networks. These studies include behavioral evaluation, record EEG and ex-vivo electrophysiology and MRI. These collaborations allow me to draw from a broad array of scientific expertise. In summary, my combined research experience in surgical implantation of electrodes, DBS, behavioral neuroscience and MRI will afford me an essential expertise and experience that will facilitate the successful implementation of the experiments outlined in this application.

Dr. Alberto E. Musto, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.E.S., is an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Anatomy, one of the Module Directors of the CareForward Curriculum, School of Medicine and Director of the Neuroanatomy, School of Health Professionals at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. Dr. Musto integrates an interdisciplinary approach in medical education and mentorship activities in neuroscience research in order to enhance research and diversity in the new medical curricula. Dr. Musto’s scientific goal is to identify potential biomarkers and preventive therapies for epilepsy. He has been bestowed with a lifetime professional honor in recognition of his accomplishments and dedication to excellence in epilepsy by the American Epilepsy Society. Prior to join EVMS, Dr. Musto was at Louisiana State University Health Science Center, New Orleans, where he completed his postdoctoral fellowship in neuroprotection and worked as an Assistant Professor of research in Neuroscience and Neurosurgery. Prior to that, Dr. Musto started his career in Buenos Aires, Argentina where he received board certifications in both neurology and radiology, completed postgraduate studies in medical education, management in health systems and a doctoral thesis in neurobiology. His research has been highlighted in multiple forums, including the New York Times, Discover magazine, the Teaching Company, and the American Society for the Advancement of Science. He is internationally recognized as an expert in nonlinear dynamics, the detection, prediction and control of crises in complex coupled systems, is one of the founders of the field of seizure prediction and of two companies in this area. His research and more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, patents, interdisciplinary conference organizations, presentations, and invited talks have stimulated an international interest in the prediction and control of epileptic seizures and understanding of the mechanisms of epileptogenesis. His research has been funded by National Institute of Health, VA, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, National Science Foundation, DoD, the Whitaker Foundation, the Epilepsy Foundation of America, CURE, the Science Foundation of Arizona, and medical device industry. Prof. Iasemidis is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers (AIMBE) and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). He has served on the editorial board of Epilepsia, the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering and the International Journal of Neural Systems, and currently is an Associate Editor of the Annals of Biomedical Engineering and a member of the editorial board of the journal of Epilepsy Research. He is a reviewer for the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and several other national and international funding agencies and foundations.

Patricio F. Reyes, MD is a board certified Neurologist and Neuropathologist, and director Barrow Neurological Institute’s Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Cognitive Disorders Program, and Neuropathology Research Laboratory. Before joining BNI he was professor of Neurology, Pathology and Psychiatry and director of Creighton University’s Center for Aging, Alzheimer’s disease and Neurodegenerative Disorders, and Brain Bank and held similar positions at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He is the American Academy of Neurology advocate for Minority Americans with AD and other dementias. His interests include characterizing the clinical manifestations of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and investigating the structural, anatomical and neurochemical substrates of neurobehavioral symptoms. He is involved in clinical trials for AD and has established clinical programs for Hispanic patients and minority caregivers. These programs are important in identifying ethnic related risk factors for AD, understanding the vulnerability of brain regions affected in AD, and verifying the safety, tolerability and efficacy of pharmacologic agents in various races. In the laboratory, he is currently involved in verifying the histological, immunohistochemical, electronmicroscopy, and metabolic changes in the brain parenchyma of triple transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease and Acetylcholinesterase knockout mouse. We expect to determine early physiologic and ultrastructural alterations that lead to neuronal loss and formation of neuritic plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles, and hope that our data will be relevant to the development of more effective therapies in AD.

Carl W. Bazil, MD, PhD, is the Caitlin Tynan Doyle Professor of Neurology, College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. Guy H Fontaine has made 15 original contributions at the inception of pacemakers since early 60s. He has serendipitously identified Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia in the late 70s. He has published more than 900 scientific papers including 201 book chapters. He was the reviewer of 17 journals in Clinical and Basic Science. He served during 5 years as a Member of the Editorial Board of Circulation. He has been invited to give 11 master lectures of 90 minutes each during three weeks in the top universities of China (2014).

Dr. Wang is Director of Neuroapoptosis Drug Discovery Laboratory, Department of Neurosurgery, Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Dr. Wang received her PhD from Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She did her postdoctoral training at University of Michigan and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Wang has published about 70 peer-reviewed articles and has served as the Guest Editor, Handling Editor, and Editorial Board Member for a number of peer-reviewed journals, as well as the scientist reviewer for institutes or foundations including NIH, DOD, BSF, and others, and invited reviewer for 34 peer-reviewed journals.

Currently I am working as Research Scientist in the Department of Neurology at University of Iowa, Iowa, USA. I did my B.Sc. (Chemistry) in 2003, M.Sc. (Organic Chemistry) in 2005 from Aligarh Muslim University and Ph.D. (Toxicology) in 2009 from the department of Toxicology, Hamdard University, Delhi, India. After completion of my Ph.D. program, I have joined the Department of Internal medicine as postdoctoral Research Associate. Here I focused my research on understanding the role of plasma glycoprotein von Willebrand factor (VWF) and VWF-cleaving protease ADAMTS13 in animal model of stroke. After that I joined the department of Neurology as an Associate Scientist. Here my research investigates the molecular mechanisms that regulate inflammation in the central nervous system that are critical to our understanding of a broad spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury. I am the member of several international societies and enlisted in the Editorial board of the journal.I have published almost 40 peer reviewed original research publications and almost 50 abstracts in National and International Neuroscience-related meeting and conferences.

Professor WK Tang was appointed to professor in the Department of Psychiatry, the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2011. Professor Tang completed his medical training at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong as an academic staff since 1999. His main research area is Neuropsychiatry in Stroke. Professor Tang has published over 100 papers in renowned journals, and has also contributed to the peer review of 40 journals. He has secured over 20 major competitive research grants. He has served the editorial boards of five scientific journals. He was also a recipient of the Young Researcher Award in 2007, awarded by the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Kurt A Jellinger, born 1931 in Vienna, is Professor of Neurology and Neuropathology at the Medical University of Vienna (Vienna, Austria), was director of the Department of Neurology, Lainz Hospital in Vienna and since 2002, director of the Institute of Clinical Neurobiology (Vienna, Austria). He has been the recipient of numerous international grants and awards, is a member of numerous national and international scientific societies, editor of many international journals of neurology, neuroscience and neuropathology. His publication records exceeds 1,000 in perr-reviewed journals, 170 contributions in scientific book, inclduding several as editor, as well as 1.300 lectures at international meetings. For the last 50 years, his research included many fields of clinical neuropathology, neurochemistry and descriptive neurobiology.

Wang is Director of Neuroapoptosis Drug Discovery Laboratory, Department of Neurosurgery, Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Dr. Wang received her PhD from Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She did her postdoctoral training at University of Michigan and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Wang has published about 70 peer-reviewed articles and has served as the Guest Editor, Handling Editor, and Editorial Board Member for a number of peer-reviewed journals, as well as the scientist reviewer for institutes or foundations including NIH, DOD, BSF, and others, and invited reviewer for 30 peer-reviewed journals.
