• Dr Attarian is currently a professor of neurology and medical director of sleep medicine and sleep fellowship at Northwestern University. He graduated with a MD in 1992 from American University of Beirut and completed residency in Neurology at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse and fellowships in epilepsy and sleep medicine at University of Rochester and Hennepin County Medical Center respectively. He has Published 70 peer reviewed papers, 20 chapters and three textbooks. He has lectured nationally and internationally including Shanghai China and Moscow Russia and participated in 30 research projects and got three grants. He has won teaching awards.

Joseph I. Sirven, M.D., is a professor of neurology and editor-in-chief of Epilepsy.com. He is currently chair of the AAN Education Meeting Subcommittee and he is on the board of directors for the American Brain Foundation and the editorial board of Neurology Now. Previously, he served as director of education for Mayo Clinic's Arizona campus with oversight over all educational activities at the Arizona campus, including medical student rotations, residencies, fellowships, Ph.D. candidates, nursing, allied health and continuing medical education programs. He was the previous chair of Neurology at Mayo Clinic's campus is Arizona and the previous vice chair of the Epilepsy Section of the American Academy of Neurology, chair of the Communication Council for the American Epilepsy Society and former chair of the Professional Advisory Board for the Epilepsy Foundation.

Dr. Alain L. Fymat is a medical-physical scientist and an educator who was educated at the Universities of Bordeaux and Paris-Sorbonne, France, and the University of California at Los Angeles. He is the current President/CEO and Professor at the International Institute of Medicine & Science. He was formerly Professor of Radiology, Radiological Sciences, Radiation Medicine (Oncology), Critical Care Medicine, and Physics at several U.S. and European Universities. His current research interests lie at the interface between science and medicine (neurological disorders; precision medicine; nanobiotechnology; nanomedicine; genetics/epigenetics/ecogenetics; and drug delivery across the brain protective barriers). He has extensively published (~350 scholarly publications) and lectured in several national and international academic, professional, governmental and industrial venues. He is a a Board member of several institutions, and Editor-in-Chief, Honorable Editor or Editor of twelve scientific Journals.

Antonio Gambardella is full professor of Neurology in the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, University Magna Graecia - Catanzaro, Italy. He is a clinical neurologist and clinical researcher with a special interest in establishing close research links with basic scientists. His group, together with molecular genetic collaborators in Italy, discovered in 2000 the beta2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor gene for nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy and subsequently has been involved in the discovery of other epilepsy genes. A more recent important scientific result has been the discovery of novel gene KCNT1 associated with a severe form of progressive myoclonus epilepsy. He has also focused on clinical and neurophysiological aspects, and genetics of temporal lobe epilepsy, the most common type of focal epilepsy. He is currently an active investigator of the "Epi25" Collaborative group that has developed from an initiative coming out of the NIH National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) and the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Consortium on Genetics of Complex Epilepsies to make more rapid progress towards fully understanding the inherited components of epilepsies

Natalia Rodríguez Álvarez is the Postdoctoral research Scientist in the department of Physiology and Medical Physics in the Epilepsy Research Group at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Combining the principles of molecular biology and neurobiology, electroencephalography, pharmacology and genetics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level has led to a broad knowledge base in a multidisciplinary field with additional experience in drug discovery and biomarkers.

Dr. Pappolla is currently a Professor appointment with the Department of Neurology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston . Dr. Pappolla received his MD degree from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina in 1978. His training includes a PhD Doctorate in Human aging in Barcelona, Spain and medical residencies and fellowships in the USA in Neurology, Anatomic Pathology, Neuropathology and Interventional Pain Medicine (Anesthesia based). This training required 10 additional years of post graduate medical education, all pursued in programs accredited by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Dr. Pappolla holds active board-certifications in 5 disciplines of Medicine (Pain Medicine, Neurology, Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology and Neuropathology). His scientific work includes more than 100 publications and book chapters mostly focusing in neuroscience research. He pioneered the relationship between Alzheimers disease and oxidative stress and cholesterol metabolism with some of his papers reaching over 700 citations in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Pappolla served for over 20 years as a consultant for the National Institutes of Health and a full Professor or Faculty at several medical schools in the USA (New York Medical College, LSU New Orleans, Mount Sinai Medical School in New York City, Medical University of South Carolina, University of Texas) where he taught Neurosciences and Neuropathology to medical students and medical residents for over 20 years. He has also served as Chairman of Neurology and Director of Neurosciences in one of the largest tertiary care centers in Mississippi, till about the time when his practice was disrupted by hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Dr. Pappolla's research interest is in the development of treatments for neurological degenerative diseases. He has patented and developed novel neuroprotective agents such as OX-1 (now on phase 2 trial for Friedriech ataxia) and melatonin related analogs for Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Dan Suiaga With a rich experience in all types of neurosurgical interventions, Dr. Dan Suiaga is recognized for interventions in complex spinal surgery (implants and spinal reconstruction, etc.), but also for cerebral vascular surgery or skull base. Although he started his professional training at the neurosurgery department of the University Hospital in Cluj-Napoca, Dr. Dan Suiaga continued to train outside the borders of Romania, in countries such as Switzerland, Israel, Germany and South Africa.

Intractable seizures plague approximately a third of epilepsy patients. Despite their prevalence, the mechanisms underlying intractable seizures remain unclear and difficult to study. One factor clouding our understanding of seizure intractability stems from existing animal models of epilepsy, which have not specifically modeled intractable seizures or genetic disorders that often associate with intractable seizures, like Focal Cortical Dysplasia (FCD) or Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). New animal models are greatly needed to understand the underlying causes of intractable seizures and develop new therapies aimed at these indications. Using in utero electroporation to transfect a small population of neurons in vivo with constitutively active mutant of Ras homolog enriched in brain (RhebCA), we have successfully developed a new mouse model of spontaneous epilepsy based on the genetic etiology of mTOR-o-pathies. This model recapitulates both anatomical and behavioral phenotypes of human TSC and FCD. RhebCA transfected animals develop focal cortical malformations that contain dysplastic neurons, cortical dyslamination and white matter heterotopia. Seizures also spontaneously develop as early as postnatal day18, and persist throughout entire lifespan of the animals (2 years). Seizures are the only complication these animals have, otherwise they are completely healthy, making them ideal subjects to study mechanistic causes of seizures and seizure-dependent downstream behavioral and physiological effects. With this model, we have elucidated several mechanisms that contribute to seizure-genesis in TSC and FCD. Lastly, we also use this model to develop new therapies, including novel cannabinoids and RNA interference approaches to mitigate refractory seizures
