Epilepsy is a chronic illness of the brain that affects individuals of all ages. More than 50 million people were affected worldwide. Synchronous brain cell activity causes seizures and relying upon the region of brain affected they will produce a range of behaviours.

Track 1: Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a CNS disorder in which disruption of nerve cell activity in the brain occurs and marked by loss of consciousness, or convulsions and sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbances. It is estimated that every year nearly 2.4 million people are suffering with Epilepsy and those with active epilepsy is between 4 to10 per 1000 people. Approximately 80% of the epilepsy patients are found in developing regions. Yearly NIH spends $30 billion for research in the field of medicine, but only ½ of 1% is spent on Epilepsy research. Epilepsy results in an estimated annual cost of $15.5 billion.

This session deals with Epilepsy and its related topics like Epilepsy in developing brain, Epileptogenesis, Genetics, Etiology and Epidemiology along with Translational research and its clinical aspects, Epilepsy drug market. And also our sessions explain how the Epileptic and Neuronal circuits wired in the “normal” brain which helps to determine how a fault leads to seizures.

Track 2: Neurobiology and Pathophysiology of Epilepsy

Seizure is defined as an transient condition of signs and symptoms which occurs because of synchronous neuronal activity in brain. Semiology explains what should be recognized in a seizure. Neurobiology is about the study of cells and their organization into functional circuits that process information and mediate behavior of the nervous system.

Pathophysiology is a convergence of pathology and physiology that explains the functional changes in a diseased condition. This session will review the pathways for seizure occurence, ion channel defects, the essential currency of Neuronal excitability, clinical signs, signalling, Inflammatory and mTOR pathways.

Nearly 80% of the individuals with epilepsy are found in developing regions. Approximately 500,000 Italians suffer from epilepsy, of which 125,000 have treatment resistant forms. Historically, the epilepsy research has been under-funded.

Annually NIH spends $30 billion for medical research, but ½ of 1% is only spent on epilepsy research. Of total medical costs Epilepsy alone results in an estimated annual cost of $15.5 billion. In developing countries, this figure is often close to twice as high due to the higher risk of experiencing conditions which leads to permanent brain damage. The risk of premature death in people with epilepsy is two to three times higher than it is for the general population.

Target Audience:

Neurologists, Epileptologists, Pharmacists, Research scientists, Epilepsy organizations, Pharmaceutical (drug design and discovery) companies, Anti- Epileptic drug Industries, Epilepsy associations & foundations, Professors and Students from Academia interested in the study of Epilepsy.

Why Rome?

In Europe, at least 6 million people have epilepsy, and 15 million Europeans will have one seizure at some time in their lives. The prevalence of epilepsy in Europe is 8.2 per 1000 people. Nevertheless, in some countries of Europe, epilepsy is not recognized as a brain disorder, and up to 40% of people with this condition may be untreated - the treatment gap. It has been estimated that the 6 million people with active epilepsy in Europe cost over € 20 billion per year, and despite this, very few European countries have national plans for managing the disorder.

The number of epilepsy specialists in Europe is highest of all WHO Regions. A wider range of therapeutic possibilities is available to people with epilepsy in Europe than elsewhere in the world. Epilepsy costs the countries of Europe over 20 billion Euro every year, an amount that could be significantly reduced with effective action.

Rome has a status of the global city. It is located on the Tiber and Aniene rivers, near the Mediterranean Sea. The Vatican City (a sovereign enclave), the seat of the Roman Catholic Church, and the home of the Pope is also found in Rome. Rome is the only city in the world to contain in its interior a whole state; the enclave of Vatican City. Rome is so filled with Christian art and architecture, wonderful sights, cultural exhibits and so much more that the city will astound you. It is fascinating no matter where you look. Rome was the 11th-most-visited city in the world, 3rd most visited in the European Union, and the most popular tourist attraction in Italy. The city is one of Europe’s and the world’s most successful city “brands”, both in terms of reputation and assets. 2

Glance at Market share of Antiepileptic drugs:

The Epilepsy Drug Market Will Increase $800 Million by 2016, Primarily Due to Uptake of Premium-Priced Third-Generation Antiepileptic Drugs (AEDs). Decision Resources, one of the world’s leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and healthcare issues, finds that the epilepsy market will increase from $2.9 billion in 2011 to nearly $3.7 billion in 2016.

The major players in the antiepileptic market include Abbott Laboratories, Cephalon, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis AG, Pfizer, Sanofi-Aventis SA, Shire, and UCB Pharma. The AED market is currently dominated by UCB's Keppra and GlaxoSmithKline's Lamictal. Other key drugs include older generation AEDs such as Pfizer's Dilantin, Abbott's Depakote, and Novartis' Tegretol and Trileptal which still have significant usage due to their longevity in the market. However, the AED dominance landscape will continue to shift towards newer generation drugs particularly following the recent market entry of GlaxoSmithKline's Trobalt/Potiga and Eisai's Fycompa which both offer first-in-class mechanisms of action

The market share of Abbott and GSK is more or less same 11.5 %( Abbott) and 11.2 %( GSK). Other antiepileptic drugs companies’ market share includes Novartis (6.9%), Sanofi Aventis (4%), Shire (0.7%) and Cephalon (0.5%).
