Epilepsy 2019

Scientific Sessions

Epilepsy 2019 welcomes attendees, participants, students, speakers, organizing committee members, delegates from all over the world to Zurich, Switzerland. We are delighted to invite you to our 5th International Conference on Epilepsy & Treatment 2019 on August 19-20, 2019 at Vienna, Austria

Session on Neurobiology of Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a chronic disorder with diverse clinical characteristics that preclude a singular mechanism a neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of seizures due to disturbances in electrical signalling and its transmission in the brain. The fact that multiple mechanisms exist is not surprising given the varied ways the normal nervous system controls this balance. In contrast, understanding seizures in the brain of an individual with epilepsy is more difficult because seizures are typically superimposed on an altered nervous system.

Removing a portion of the brain. The most common type of epilepsy surgery is the removal of the portion of the brain usually about the size of a golf ball that’s causing the seizures. This type of surgery — called resective surgery can remove a lobe, a portion of a lobe or a lesion and is highly successful

The role of immunity and inflammation appears to be an integral part of the pathogenic processes associated with some seizures, particularly with refractory epilepsy. Prompt treatment with immunotherapy may lead to better outcomes. Immune treatment options for treatment of epilepsy include therapies such as corticosteroids, immunoglobulin’s, plasmapheresis, or steroid-sparing drugs such as azathioprine

Session on Metacognitive beliefs in Epilepsy

Emotional distress is common in people with epilepsy (PWE) for which efficacious interventions are required. Developing evidence-based treatments should be based on testable models of the psychological mechanisms maintaining psychopathology. The Self-Regulatory Executive Function (S-REF) model proposes that maladaptive metacognitive beliefs and processes are central to the development and maintenance of emotional distress. Although preliminary support exists for the role of metacognitive beliefs in emotional distress in PWE, their role has yet to be tested when controlling for the contribution made by illness perceptions

Session on Cannabinoids in treatment of resistant Epilepsy

The interest in cannabis-based products for the treatment of refractory epilepsy has skyrocketed in recent years. Treatment-resistant epilepsy (TRE) affects 30% of epilepsy patients and is associated with severe morbidity and increased mortality. Cannabis-based therapies have been used to treat epilepsy for millennia, but only in the last few years have we begun to collect data from adequately powered placebo-controlled, randomized trials (RCTs) with cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabis derivative

Doctors have developed when an individual experience a seizure for the first time doctors advices him for EEG and observes for abnormality in the of  EEG these tests differentiate patient from epileptic to non- epileptic .Research suggests that patients are only suggested to medicated for epilepsy only after their  occurrence of second seizure. Many non-epileptic patients experience an unusual brain activity so; it is advised to record EEG while sleeping is preferable. Brain scan like CT- SCAN are used

Session on Epilepsy Therapeutics & Drug therapy

Majorly epilepsy is treated with antiepileptic drugs primarily first line drugs like carbamazepine, valproate, phenytoin, carbazepine whereas, second generation include zonisamide and lacosamide are showing good efficacy with low adverse effects. Ethosuximide is majorly used for primary treatment. Diazepam is now available as rectal gel so that can be applied by family members for prolonged seizures. Drug combination sometimes lead to adverse effects like fatigue and loss of appetite so, combinations are often replaced by monotherapy unless monotherapy achieves desired results. When medication doesn’t achieve the required targets doctor can sometimes suggest for surgery 64% cases showed seizure free cases who undergone surgery

Session on Highly marketed and used drugs of Epilepsy

The global market for Antiepileptic drugs is driven by advancement in drugs modification. Over the past several periods, the number of available Antiepileptic drugs has more than doubled. , many of the presently available Antiepileptic drugs have basics pharmacokinetics and more small effects on liver metabolism that converts into a lower rate of side effects, The antiepileptic drug market is threatened by generic competition, which has risen dramatically in the face of patent expirations among various major branded Antiepileptic drugs. These are the major restraints for the Global antiepileptic drugs market

Epilepsy is a chronic disorder usually occurred in children and people aged above 60 years. A neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of seizures with loss of consciousness. It is associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain with the loss of consciousness; it may be of different types and with different episodes of seizures from person to person. Epilepsy is a non-communicable disease with approximately 50 million people in the world suffers from this disease. People with Epilepsy respond to treatment approximately within 70% of the time. About three-fourths of people with Epilepsy living in low- and middle- income countries do not get the treatment properly as they need. In many parts of the world, people with Epilepsy and their families suffer from stigma and discrimination.  Reasons to Undertake

Epilepsy can affect every one of us In Europe, at least 6 million people have epilepsy, and 15 million Europeans will have one seizure at some time in their lives. Nevertheless, in some countries of Europe, epilepsy is not recognized as a brain disorder and up to 40% of people with this condition may be untreated - the treatment gap.

Antiepileptic drugs are not always available or are not affordable and diagnostic facilities are lacking or are inadequate. It has been estimated that the 6 million people with active epilepsy in Europe cost over € 20 billion per year, and despite this, very few European countries have national plans for managing the disorder.

The 6 million people with epilepsy in Europe want to bring epilepsy “out of the shadows”.
