It has been estimated that the 6 million people with active epilepsy in Europe cost over € 20 billion per year, and despite this, very few European countries have national plans for managing the disorder. The ILAE/IBE/WHO Global Campaign Against Epilepsy is working towards this goal. Let’s bring epilepsy out of the shadows, on behalf of and with the 6 million people with epilepsy in Europe.

The number of epilepsy specialists in Europe is highest of all WHO Regions. A wider range of therapeutic possibilities is available to people with epilepsy in Europe than elsewhere in the world. Epilepsy costs the countries of Europe over 20 billion Euro every year, an amount that could be significantly reduced with effective action.

The Epilepsy Drug Market Will Increase $800 Million by 2016, Primarily Due to Uptake of Premium-Priced Third-Generation Antiepileptic Drugs (AEDs). Decision Resources, one of the world’s leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and healthcare issues, finds that the epilepsy market will increase from $2.9 billion in 2011 to nearly $3.7 billion in 2016.

The major players in the antiepileptic market include Abbott Laboratories, Cephalon, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis AG, Pfizer, Sanofi-Aventis SA, Shire, and UCB Pharma. The AED market is currently dominated by UCB's Keppra and GlaxoSmithKline's Lamictal. Other key drugs include older generation AEDs such as Pfizer's Dilantin, Abbott's Depakote, and Novartis' Tegretol and Trileptal which still have significant usage due to their longevity in the market. However, the AED dominance landscape will continue to shift towards newer generation drugs particularly following the recent market entry of GlaxoSmithKline's Trobalt/Potiga and Eisai's Fycompa which both offer first-in-class mechanisms of action

The market share of Abbott and GSK is more or less same 11.5 %( Abbott) and 11.2 %( GSK). Other antiepileptic drugs companies’ market share includes Novartis (6.9%), Sanofi Aventis (4%), Shire (0.7%) and Cephalon (0.5%).
